Using a Centerpin reel for Largemouth Bass Fishing?

The centerpinreel is one of the simplest of all reels, but also one of the most difficult to use. Therefore, you are not likely to see many largemouth bass fishermen using a centerpin reel. Casting with the centerpin takes skill, especially if you are using a heavy bass bait over long distances, which is one of the main reasons for its dramatic decline in popularity after the easy-casting fixed spool reel was introduced to the mass market in the 1940s. The centerpin isn’t very likely to be able to handle many lures for bass that you will find on the shelf of your local bass and pro shop. Centerpins are still used by some anglers in the UK and Europe, but they are virtually unknown in the US and scarcely used in Canada.

The centerpin consists of a flanged drum that carries the line and revolves freely on a steel axle. Most have a ratchet mechanism and some also have a drag system, but it’s the reel’s free-running action and the way that it can be controlled simply by thumb pressure that are its main advantages.

Because the line winds directly onto the spool, instead of first passing over a bale arm, the centerpin gives extremely sensitive control over float tackle that is being allowed to drift smoothly downstream with the current. Since most lures for bass are not a floating bass bait, this is not very useful for largemouth bass fishermen. With a centerpin, the line can be retrieved rapidly by giving the drum a series of sharp taps with the fingertips to spin it, or it can be wound in by using a handle fixed to the outer flange of the drum.

The amount of line retrieved for each turn of the handle depends on the drum diameter: the larger the drum, the more line it will wind on with each revolution. Most centerpins have a drum diameter of three to six inches.

The centerpin reel is an excellent little reel for a lot of light tackle fishing (like fly fishing). However, there are not many fly type lures for bass. A bass bait is a little more sturdy than most fly baits. To confirm this, the next time you are at your favorite bass and pro shop purchasing a fishing license, check the shelves to see the difference in a fly and bass lure. I think you will be able to tell that largemouth bass fishing lures are different.

Fly Fishing Reel Basics

If you’ve ever visited a bass and pro shop and saw a fly fishing reel, you can clearly see that you wouldn’t use a fly fishing reel to fish for largemouth bass. A fly fishing rod would probably not withstand the weight of a bass bait. Lures for bass are significantly heavier than most flies used in fly fishing. Anyone who says that a fly reel is used merely to hold the line has probably never hooked a big rainbow trout or a wily specimen brown trout that spends most of the fight powering toward the nearest snag. Anyone who has will know that to use the light lines so often needed to fool big ‘educated’ trout, you need a reel that will give line smoothly with no jerks and jars that can snap that line.

One of the most important developments in the modern fly reel is its drag system. When once a simple check mechanism was considered good enough, today a sophisticated drag system is found on your average-priced reels. The most popular and efficient of these is the disc drag, which is both smooth in operation, completely variable, and hard wearing.

Whether using light tippets for ultra-selective trout, tackling big largemouth bass or saltwater species that can run hundreds of yards at breakneck speeds, or simply in the hope of hooking a good fish, it is imperative that the reel is able to give line as the fish runs. Smoothness is the key: a drag mechanism that gives with an initial jerk is likely to break the line as a fish snatches the lures for bass (or bass bait), especially at short range, while for big, brawling tuna, largemouth bass and sailfish, a drag that locks up as the fish powers off is an absolute disaster.

Fly reels are now made from a variety of materials. Wood and brass were once the standard, but developments in modern lightweight materials means that we now have models made of graphite (carbon fiber), magnesium alloy, polycarbonate and aluminium, the latter being preferred for most fly reels.

Depending on the price and specification, aluminium reels can be made either from cast aluminium or from a solid bar that has been machined to shape. Being stronger weight-for-weight than cast aluminium, aluminium bar stock allows reels to be made lighter and is normally used on the higher priced models. With higher priced materials, you can try catching larger largemouth bass using some of the more demanding lures for bass (like spinnerbaits, buzzbaits,anytopwater bass bait).

Choosing and Using a Fishing Pole

Although fishing poles suitable for largemouth bass have been in use for many years, they are generally regarded by anglers as a product of the modern era. This is because there is a fundamental difference between the old type of pole and its modern version, and that difference lies in the materials used to construct them. Where once bamboo was the main component of the pole, resulting in a 'saggy' and heavy tool when used with modern bass bait and bass lures, it was replaced first by glass fiber and then by graphite (carbon fiber). Graphite now reigns supreme, and it has revolutionized pole fishing.

Most modern poles are of the take-apart type and consist of sections (lengths) of graphite tubing, each formed so that it fits over or into the next, resulting in a continuous length of tubing that tapers smoothly from butt to tip. Some poles, mainly the relatively short, slim models known as whips, are telescopic with sections that retract into the butt.

Today, pole fishing is so popular the world over that there are literally hundreds of different styles of pole. They all look basically the same -thick at one end and thin at the other but there can be many important differences.

Price is the most obvious one. You can check your local bass and pro shop, but in general a pole can be bought quite cheaply, but a top quality pole may cost as much as a small car. An expensive pole should be offering the largemouth bass angler many advantages.

Length is vital. A pole has the major benefit of being able to present a bass bait as delicately as possible and an angler wants to be able to do this at maximum range. A good quality pole will be manageable at 12 to 14 meters (39 to 46 feet), and may even extend to beyond 16 meters (52 ft). A cheap pole may sometimes offer up to 14 meters in length, but it will usually be too heavy and 'floppy' in the middle part to present lures for bass correctly and efficiently. A good pole will remain rigid, even when fished at its maximum length, making it far easier for the angler to control.

Strength is extremely important. When a pole is designed, there is always a compromise between length and strength. It is feasible for manufacturers to make a super-long pole, but to make it light enough for anglers to handle at beyond 20 meters (66 ft) would mean a reduction in the strength of the graphite being used. The pole would simply be too fragile to risk using.

Use this information to help you size and pick the correct pole for your use. If done correctly, you will have the correct rod for your use!

How to choose the proper hooks

With so many sizes and patterns of hooks on the market, it’s essential to choose a selection of hooks that are properly suited to the type of fishing you intend to do. If you are fishing for largemouth bass, it is important to use hooks that are the size needed for largemouth. If you are using bass baits, most lures for bass will have a size 3-0, 4-0 or 5-0 hook that is perfect for bass.
If you are fishing for flatfish, which have small, rather distorted mouths, you should use long-shanked, narrow-gape hooks. These are readily available, but like most hooks they need attention before use. With the exception of the chemically-sharpened hooks, you should regard every hook you buy as blunt. Before use, sharpen each hook on an oilstone or, if it’s a big one, use a file first then finish off with a stone.
For larger shore-caught fish such as catfish and cod, chemically-sharpened hooks such as the Mustad range are ideal. Available in sizes up to 4-0, these hooks are strong enough in the wire to resist bending or breaking under hard stress, and the round bend and short point makes them a near-perfect overall hook design. The same hooks can be used for rock fishing for medium-sized species, but when you’re fishing in rocky waters you should check the fine hook point regularly for damage.
The fine-wire Mustad type of hook is good for fish or bass baits of up to 10 or 15 pounds, but for larger species such as conger, tope or big cod, a more substantial hook is essential. One of the best and strongest readily-available patterns is the 4-0/6-0 O’Shaughnessy bronzed or stainless steel hook, a flat-forged, straight-eyed, no-nonsense iron which will retain its shape even during brutal usage. Again, these hooks should be carefully sharpened before and during use.
The O’Shaughnessy hooks are also ideal for most inshore boat fishing. Available in sizes up to 10-0, the most useful boat fishing sizes are 6-0 and 8-0, which can be used with whole or cut fish or squid baits. The beauty of these hooks is their strength; many sea hooks snap or distort in use, but the O’Shaughnessy is unlikely to.
Inexperienced anglers make the mistake of buying expensive rods, reels, bass baits and lines, then using cheap, poor quality hooks. The best equipment and lures for bass in the world won’t be much use if the hook lets you down. The worst sort of sea hooks are those with a point which is too long, fragile and curved, because such a point is likely to be too brittle to withstand hard use.
Careful choice of hook is even more important when you’re fishing for really large fish (like a lunker largemouth bass). Even a small shark is a big fish which calls for a strong, well-shaped hook. Hook sizes suitable for shark and other large fish range from 8-0 to 16-0, the most widely-used sizes being 10-0, 12-0 and 14-0.

How to obtain a fishing license

We have received a lot of emails from largemouth bass (among other) fishermen who didn’t know how, when or where to obtain a fishing license. Depending on the state, it can be rather confusing as to who is required to have a license, when a license is required and how to obtain a license if one is indeed necessary. The issue becomes more confusing when you take in consideration that a lot of bass fishermen go on vacation to different states and will need to know the requirements of the state in which they are fishing. Some of the good news is that most states have similar rules to one another. The bad news is that most states require a fishing license even if you are not a resident of the state in which you are fishing. For example, if you are fishing in Florida, here’s the rule on if a fishing license is required:
A fishing license is required to attempt to take fish. If you cast your line, catch nothing, catch and release, or catch and keep and you are not in a specifically exempt group; you need a license.
For example, a lot of states allow for exemptions for those who are younger then 16 years of age. This is good for the industry since it’s great to introduce young people to the industry when they are young and it allows them to fall in love with fishing, as we all have. We, as an industry and as a government, should encourage young people to fish without worry about the requirement of obtaining a fishing license or being ‘outside’ the law.
Another age exemption that you will typically find in most states is for those who are older then 65 years of age. This is also an exemption that I think we can all find as acceptable. Most older persons have the time to go fishing and they should be honored for all that they have done to build our society. With the two exemptions mentioned, we are encouraging grandparents to take grandchildren fishing.
Therefore, based on this statement, unless you fall in a vary narrow list of exempt groups, you will need a fishing license. Upon reviewing most other states’ requirements, they are all rather similar. Typically, a fishing license -even a temporary one- is required even to attempt to take fish.
As you can imagine, this is a very difficult issue that has a lot of different requirements and requirements. In an attempt to help unravel the requirements and help. we have created a couple of videos. Even though the videos are more for amusement then hard facts, it is meant to start a conversation as to what the requirements are.
